Holding your own against the landscape
A window full of mountain will flatten a timid scheme. Confident, tactile materials at real scale — stone, timber, plaster, wool — read properly against that backdrop, where thin finishes and busy patterns simply disappear.
Light that changes through the day
Mountain-edge light is brilliant at midday and goes gold and then blue very quickly in the evening. Colours and materials chosen on site across those hours behave predictably; those chosen indoors somewhere else regularly do not.
Warmth in a house made of glass
The custom houses here often have a great deal of glazing, which is magnificent and can feel cold in every sense. Textiles, rugs, considered lighting and softer surfaces are what make these rooms comfortable to sit in on a winter evening rather than merely impressive.
Bringing the woodland palette indoors
Oak bark, dry grass, grey rock and dark green scrub are outside every window in this city. Using those tones deliberately inside ties the house to its setting, and it ages far better than any colour scheme chosen from a trend forecast.
Taking the hardness out of the acoustics
Houses here often combine large glazed openings, hard flooring and generous volumes, which looks magnificent and sounds unforgiving — conversation carries, footsteps echo, and a room full of people becomes tiring rather than convivial. The remedies are all part of ordinary interior design: rugs of genuine size rather than token ones, upholstery with some mass to it, textiles at the windows even where privacy is not required, and considered placement of soft material on the surfaces that are actually reflecting sound. Handled well it is invisible, and it changes a room from impressive to comfortable, which is the harder and more valuable achievement.
