Making a modest plan feel generous
Making an eight-foot ceiling feel higher
Vertical lines, full-height joinery, doors taken up as far as they will go, and lighting that washes the ceiling rather than dotting it all raise the perceived height of a standard room. None of it costs much; together they change how the whole house reads.
Designing for a full household
Many of these houses hold more people than the builder planned for, across more than one generation. Interiors that acknowledge that — with real storage, durable surfaces, and spaces where somebody can be alone — work far better than schemes designed for a showroom photograph.
Light in a plan with modest windows
Original openings here are small by current standards. Pale surfaces placed where the daylight lands, glazed internal doors, mirrors used structurally rather than decoratively, and a properly layered electric scheme are what stop these rooms feeling closed.
A palette with a point of view
A plain house is not improved by a plain scheme. Committing to a defined palette and a consistent material language across the whole plan is what gives a straightforward tract interior the sense of intention that expensive finishes alone never deliver.

Flooring that tolerates constant use and is repairable rather than disposable, paint finishes that can be cleaned, joinery built from materials that survive daily opening, and upholstery chosen for the reality of family life are what make a scheme durable. It is a less glamorous conversation than colour, and it is the one that decides whether an interior still looks deliberate when the household that lives in it has been using it properly for a decade.
