Taking a position on volume ceilings
A two-storey living room can be magnificent or merely tall. Committing to it — with lighting at the right height, a considered treatment of the upper wall, and materials that hold the space acoustically — is better than the common compromise of furnishing the bottom and ignoring the top.
Angles, niches and the arched openings of the era
Nineties plans are full of curved arches, plant shelves and diagonal walls. Some are worth keeping and detailing honestly; many are worth squaring off. Making that call deliberately, room by room, is the difference between a house that feels updated and one that feels merely repainted.
Colour under South Orange County light
Bright, warm coastal-valley light shifts strongly through the day and is unkind to colours chosen indoors. Testing on the wall, at the hours the room is used, is a small discipline that prevents the most common and most expensive decorating mistake here.
Furnishing a plan with several levels
Where rooms step, furniture layouts have to acknowledge the change rather than fight it. Anchoring each level with its own rug, lighting and seating logic makes a split plan read as a sequence of rooms rather than one interrupted one.
