Designing against a very strong view
A dominant outlook flattens fussy schemes and rewards confident ones. Fewer materials used more decisively, low horizontal furniture that keeps sightlines open, and a palette that holds its own against blue and grey daylight are what make these rooms feel composed rather than merely bright.
Coastal daylight is a colour problem
Light reflected off water is cooler and more variable than inland light, and it shifts dramatically between morning haze and clear afternoon. Colour selections here get tested on site across those conditions, because a paint that looks warm in a showroom can turn grey and lifeless in a room facing the sea.
Mid-century bones, treated respectfully
Much of the stock carries genuine period character: post-and-beam structure, clerestory glazing, generous overhangs. The design decision is which of those to keep honest and which to let go, and the schemes that age best are the ones that identify the house's real assets before choosing a style.
Lighting for the hour after sunset
These rooms are used hardest when the view goes dark and the glass becomes a mirror. Layered lighting that keeps the interior comfortable without turning every window into a black reflective wall is one of the most valuable and least-considered pieces of design work on this coast.
