Interiors for architecture that already has an opinion
Let the architecture lead
Where a house has strong original character, the interior scheme should defer to it and then do something confident within that frame. Fighting a period building with a wholly opposed aesthetic produces rooms that feel unresolved no matter how good the individual pieces are.
Lighting rooms designed before electricity was cheap
Period rooms were lit by a centre fixture and daylight. Modern comfort needs layers, but rows of recessed cans in a plaster ceiling are a visible mistake. Wall lights, concealed sources and carefully placed fixtures do the work without damaging the ceiling plane.
Colour against original plaster and tile
Original glazed tile and hand-finished plaster carry colours that will not be ignored. Building the scheme outward from what is staying — rather than choosing a palette and then discovering the conflict — is the practical route to a house that agrees with itself.
Coastal exposure reaches inside
Sun and salt-laden air off the water are hard on textiles, hardware and finishes near openings. Specifying for that exposure is not caution, it is simply accurate — and it is far cheaper than replacing a beautiful specification after two seasons.
