The strongest move is usually rotational rather than additive. Opening the wall between kitchen and living space, or relocating the working core so the sink and the seating share the horizon, converts a service room into the room the household actually occupies — without adding a foot of floor area.

A west-facing kitchen on this coast takes hard afternoon sun. Glazing specification, the placement of task lighting, and finishes that do not bounce light into the cook's eyes are practical design work here, not decoration — a beautiful stone that dazzles at five o'clock has failed.
What salt air does to a kitchen
Marine air reaches inland surfaces here through open doors and constant ventilation. Hardware finishes, appliance exteriors and window ironmongery all live shorter lives than their inland equivalents unless they are chosen for the exposure at specification stage.
City review, with geology in its brief
Plans go to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes Building & Safety Division, whose stated mission includes coordination of geological and soils evaluations. A kitchen inside the existing envelope rarely engages that side of the review, but knowing it is there shapes how any structural element is drawn.
