Interiors for the Conejo Valley
Colour under hard inland light
Bright, direct valley sun bleaches soft colours and exaggerates warm ones. Palettes chosen on site, with samples judged at midday and at dusk, behave very differently from those chosen in a showroom, and the difference is obvious on every wall in the house.
Shade as a design material
Where oaks filter the light, rooms take on a green cast and cool considerably. Rather than fighting that, the better schemes use it — warmer timber tones, materials with depth, and lighting that supplements the canopy instead of pretending it is not there.
Making a ranch plan feel considered
Long, low, horizontal rooms respond to horizontal thinking: continuous flooring, low furniture, and sightlines held open through the plan. Fighting the proportions with tall, vertical gestures is the most common way these houses are made to feel awkward.
Rooms that work in August
Window treatment, textile choice and even flooring affect how a room feels at the peak of an inland summer. Treating thermal comfort as part of the interior design — not as something the air conditioning will handle alone — is what makes these houses pleasant rather than merely handsome.
